Lawyer Fined $96,000 for AI-Fabricated Legal Citations in Landmark Case
A U.S. federal judge in Oregon has imposed nearly $96,000 in penalties on San Diego attorney Stephen Brigandi after legal filings in a family dispute case were found to contain over 20 non-existent legal citations generated by artificial intelligence. This is believed to be among the largest sanctions ever levied against an attorney for AI-related misconduct. The penalties include $15,500 in disciplinary sanctions and $80,500 in opposing counsel fees. The filings were submitted during a lawsuit
