Japan, US Team Up on $5.4 Billion Modular Nuclear Reactor Project

The United States and Japan are deepening energy cooperation with plans to construct a small modular nuclear reactor (SMR) in Tennessee. The project, led by GE Hitachi and the federally owned Tennessee Valley Authority, will have a 300 MW capacity and is expected to cost $5.4 billion. This marks a significant investment, with the cost per megawatt standing at $18 million — even surpassing the per-megawatt price tag of the recently completed Vogtle nuclear station, the world's most expensive powe
